ABOUT
Asylum Studios was founded in 1999 with the aim of providing affordable artists’ studios, and a gallery space for exhibitions, gigs, talks and film screenings.
The Studios are run as a co-operative, and currently provide studio and workshop space for 20 members with a variety of practices - painters, musicians, printmakers and filmmakers. We organise regular exhibitions, run an artist residency programme, and promote live music events, workshops, talks, and film screenings. The Studios also have darkroom, printmaking, and ceramics facilities available for use by studio members and other individuals/organisations.
The studios are located near Woodbridge, Suffolk, on the site of the ex-United States Air Force base 'RAF Bentwaters’ which was operational up until the end of the Cold War, when it was decommissioned in 1993. The building which the studios now occupies served as the computer systems data centre, and was also home to the 'Air Force Office of Special Investigation', complete with prison cells and interrogation room. Many original features of the site remain - aircraft hangars, runway and control tower - with the buildings now repurposed for business, agricultural use, TV + film, and artists’ studios.
