Moiré Found Places / Gifts Display Shop is an exhibition intertwining two bodies of
work by artist Lady Lucy. Her collaged and painted wall hangings, utilise the surfaces
of found fabric materials, layering these with tinted acrylic gesso, water-based oils
and cut fabric to discover real or imagined places through gesture and process. The
installation of hangings echo the interconnections between the design of Moiré fabric
and sea, forest, radio waves at the gallery site. Asylum is situated on a former RAF
Station active between WW2 and the Cold War – in proximity to the Suffolk coast
and surrounded by Rendlesham Forest.
The Gifts series are painted objects using product packaging accumulated from the
artist's life: containers for stock cubes, avocados, iphones, chocolates,
antidepressants, asthma inhalers, tea, dates, painkillers, satsumas, tomatoes, ice
cream, granola, biscuits and bleach. The Gifts are priced using an analogue
algorithm which offers a range of affordable artworks and prompts questions about
the value of the art object.
Dr Lucy Woollett also known as Lady Lucy makes paintings, drawings and moving
image. Her work is strongly informed by her interest in the social function and value
of her activities as an artist and more specifically as a painter. Taking an economic
approach to scale, the work is made in series, applying processes of painting,
layering, abstraction, refiguring, and the juxtaposing of multiple references where
ideas merge through collage. Recent Projects include Unwanted Gift (2024) at Five
Years and Foundation of Kindness, Shared Experiences, Shared Burden (2022) a
permanent commission for The Royal Marsden NHS.
