Spoken Words by the artists
Situated in the Suffolk hinterland where reclaimed
marshes meet terra-firma, is this liminal landscape that
has inspired and brought together the eight artists who
have made new work for SLAP's inaugural exhibition.
The location hovers between times, stories, histories,
and geographies. Originally RAF Bentwaters (named
after requisitioned farmland during WWII) it then
became USAF as the Cold War took hold. Along the
site’s northern perimeter is Asylum Studios and it’s
Gallery; once the computer central intelligence room of
a world before the Berlin Wall came down, and now the
venue for this exhibition. An eerie two-way
interrogation room mirror is one of many scattered
remnants abandoned from times gone by. The abutting
medieval woodland oozes mythic legends of witches,
druids, and visitors from other worlds, whilst global
goods in containers arrive and depart from the port of
nearby Felixstowe, sating the needs of 21 st  century
consumption.
Bentwaters of 2025 is a conundrum of abandoned
artefacts that, in our here and now, act as clues to
previous occurrences and past dramatic events. This
unsettling landscape is compelling, seemingly insistent
that we engage with its strange and potent essence.
Unable to flinch and look away each artist has been
pulled irrevocably into the vortex of Bentwater’s
imposing ether, beguiled and coaxed into responding to
the inherent statement emanating from within the
earth it sits on – ‘Something Happened Here’.
